Agriculture has always played a key role in the Moroccan economy, and over the years, the sector has adapted to different fluctuations to finally become one of the most important factors in the economy.

In some countries, its importance is more obvious, but the reality is that all countries in the world depend on agriculture for one thing or another. According to figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Maritime Fishing, Rural Development and Water and Forests, this strategic sector alone accounts for 40% of the active population and more than 80% in rural areas, which represents more than 4 million jobs.

The recent awareness of the limits of natural resources and pollution of soil, air and water, pushes for sustainable agriculture. If effective changes are not made, the impact of climate change on agriculture will eventually destroy the food supply…

In this article, we explain why the agricultural sector is so important.

  1. The ‘’Green Morocco Plan ‘’

The Green Morocco Plan was launched in 2008, under the impetus of Aziz Akhannouch, the Minister of Agriculture, as the first pillar in the fight against food insecurity, with the objective of developing and modernizing the Kingdom’s agriculture. Thanks to this good initiative, great results have already been observed since its implementation, namely the growth of national agricultural production.

  1. Why is agriculture important ?

a. Source of raw materials

Raw materials are essential to large industries in ways that many people are not even aware of. Indeed, raw materials are crucial in production because the economic health of a country is strongly impacted by the amount of raw materials it possesses.

b. International trade

Agricultural raw materials represent an important part of international trade. Countries that have a lot of them export them and exchange them with materials they do not have.

c. Jobs

Whether working as a farmer, harvester, agricultural equipment technician, scientist, etc. There are many jobs available in this field . In developing countries, agricultural jobs help reduce the high unemployment rate.

d. Development of countries

Economic development depends on the state of a country’s agricultural sector. When trade, national income, and employment are positively combined, a country’s poverty is reduced and economic growth is stimulated.

  1. Is agriculture a policy priority for Morocco?

Since independence in 1956, Morocco’s agricultural sector has played an important role in the country’s economic and social fabric. Since then, the agricultural industry has received increased attention because of its importance to the country’s development.

In conclusion, we can deduce that the development of the agricultural sector has a significant and considerable impact on national food production, food security and economic and social welfare in general. Therefore, it is necessary to design, implement and support agricultural initiatives and policies associated with national development policies and trade policies to improve and strengthen the economic growth and economic and social welfare of the country.
